Winners of the 2004 awards were Lisa Garrigues for "Porch Talk: Reading Their Eyes Were Watching God" (September 2003) and Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey for "Using Graphic Novels, Anime, and the Internet in an Urban High School" (January 2004).

Honorable mentions were awarded to Sharon Bishop for "The Power of Place" (July 2004) and Kimberly Price for "Teaching as Learning in a Yup'ik Eskimo Village" (November 2003).
