The Editor of the New York State English Council Monograph seeks articles to be included in the following book: Social Literacy and Classroom Communities

Twenty years ago, Frank Smith published his landmark work, Joining the Literacy Club. In this book he outlined his theories about the social dimensions of literacy acquisition. Since that time, his work has grown to iconic status in the varied fields of English Education. Today, more than ever, we recognize the social dimension of literacy, both for its challenges and for its power.

For a book length study of this topic, we seek discussion on the following topics:

>What elements of Smith's thesis do we still embrace?

>How has our view of the Literacy Club changed since 1988?

>How do you develop learning communities in your classrooms?

>How do you, as a teacher, support students as they strive to join the club?

>How do the many new constructs of writing, such as text messaging and blogging, affect students' literacy development?

>How do we capitalize on the social dimensions of literacy for adolescents? College students? English language learners? Elementary age students?

>How is social literacy embedded in your school program? Your classroom?

>What are the hallmarks of quality classroom community?

Manuscripts related to one or more of these topics will be carefully considered for publication. Approaches to the topic could include research, case studies, theory, reflections, or pedagogical investigations. Teachers, administrators, and students are welcomed to submit manuscripts. Manuscript deadline: June 15, 2008.

Manuscript length should be eight to twenty-five double-spaced pages (MLA style). All accepted manuscripts must be resubmitted on disk (MS Word, Office, ClarisWorks, etc). Include a cover letter with your name, address, telephone number, and email address. All submissions will be acknowledged. Publication decisions will be made by July 1, 2008. Anticipated publication date: October 2008.
