>Writing Our Hope: The Poetry Contest
Writing Our Hope, an e-zine of creative nonfiction writings by high school students, has released its first issue on December 10, 2007. Any high school (9–12) student in North America may submit one poem that does not exceed fifty lines and adheres to the themes of hope, tolerance, and equality. The National Council of Teachers of English is now accepting nominations for the David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research in the Teaching of English. Nominations of publications to be considered should be postmarked no later than March 1, 2008. This award recognizes published research in language, literature, rhetoric, teaching procedures, or cognitive processes that may sharpen the teaching or the content of English at any level. GSN's National Vocabulary Championship (NVC) is a nationwide academic competition that offers high school students the opportunity to win college tuition through local and national events. Created with educational partner The Princeton Review, the NVC is open to eligible high school students in the fifty states and the District of Columbia. The NVC is the main component of GSN's Win With Words initiative that is dedicated to improving language arts skills in high schools by engaging students in wordplay and promoting an enhanced vocabulary.
